Treaties Recognized, Affirmed, Honoured, Implemented
* Watch video “The Day of Apology” (18 min) as a class.
www.ainc-inac.gc.ca/ai/rqpi/apo/apovi-eng.asp
* Find a copy of Prime Minister Harper's speech on "The Day of Apology" and copy and paste it into a word cloud generator (ex. www.wordle.com)
* Discuss the word cloud created using the speech. What are some of the most common words throughout the speech? Are there any words listed in the word cloud that you feel should have more prominance? Why? What words are missing from the word cloud that are important to include?
* Have students copy notes on the Day of Apology. See document below.
* Discuss how urban reserves are being established as a means of honouring the treaty promise. Refer to the following article from the Regina Leader Post concerning Regina's first urban reserve. http://www.canada.com/reginaleaderpost/news/story.html?id=13781987-8be3-42a6-a8be-bee4a3061c42&k=5353
* More information regarding urban reserves can be found in the Treaty Resource for Gr. 6 from the Office of the Treaty Commissioner (page 39) http://www.rcsd.ca/moodle/file.php/122/Grade_6/Grade_6.pdf
* Discuss the phrase “As long as the sun shines, the grasses grow, and the rivers flow” with regards to treaties. What other phrases can the students suggest that may mean close to the same thing (ie. forever)?
